A Brief Talk on Coupon Code Marketing from SooBest

NEW YORK, April 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — B2C operating rules have always been framed around users’ constantly changing needs and according to their own goals, constantly seeking to determine and attain that critical point. B2C SooBest, which offers a wide range of products such as fashionable women’s clothing, men’s clothing, digital watches and charm jewelry, has the following advice on coupon code marketing promotion.

Why focus on the customers? Because only they are the businessmen’s bread and butter, and because the essential purpose of a business is to sell more products, to gain more loyal customers and to make more money.

Coupons, like points, do not belong to the core functionality of the whole B2C system, but are just an extended functionality of the operational level. Coupons can be combined in a variety of ways, also like membership points.

It is commonly known that the cost of developing new customers is more than twice as high as that of maintaining old customers. For every 5% reduction in the loss of customers, profits will increase 25-85%. By using coupons to keep old customers interested and to promote their sustained consumption, a company can save more time and get more money.

As for the new customers, delivering a coupon to them upon registration is not a small enticement. From the angle of marketing promotion, that coupon is also more suitable to use. Sharing coupons via different promotion channels (such as email, industry partners, promotional events and so on) to provide preferential benefits is also a strategy that sees results.

Ways of Issuing Coupons

1. Coupons obtained by shopping: In order to encourage secondary purchasing, a business can make rules such as if an order’s total reaches $200+, the shopper can get a $20 coupon for their next purchase.

2. Group-buy coupons: Coupons procured by shoppers through group-buying sites.

3. Registration gifts: These coupons encourage visitors to register and start shopping; once a visitor registers, the site auto-sends the coupon to the user.

4. Holiday coupons: Exclusive coupons and selected products sent to customers in recognition of a holiday, or an encouraging message on the site alerting customers to click for special coupons.

5. Authorized third-party platforms: Companies can release coupons to members of some shopping guide platforms, particularly those platforms mainly related to coupon-gathering and shopping rebates.

Types of Coupons

1. Fixed incentive coupons are those with a fixed discount amount of $10, $20, $30, $100.

2. Total purchase discounts are those that cover the whole shopping cart, such as 10% off orders over $200.

3. Free shipping.

Conditions of Use

Conditions of use for coupons can vary according to the following standards:

1. Discounts based on membership level. For example, a Gold member can use a $30 coupon.

2. Discounts based on shopping cart subtotal, such as a shopping cart with $200-worth of products is eligible for a $30 coupon.

3. Discounts based on total number of items in the shopping cart, such as three items can use a $30 coupon.

4. Discounts according to product categories, such as products of “category A” are eligible for a $20 coupon.

5. Discounts according to specific products, such as an order including A, B or C can use a $10 coupon.

6. Coupons that are only eligible during a specific time period.

7. Coupons that are applied based on the delivery address, with different discounts for different areas.

All in all, coupons have a variety of uses and rules that extend beyond what is discussed above. In the modern retail commodity industry, using coupons and promotions has become an extensive marketing tool. Depending on the Internet, B2C websites have more advantages in using coupons than traditional enterprises, whether the issue is one of cost or payment accuracy.

Businesses should pay attention and take full advantage of the characteristics of coupons, emphasizing the care of customers, and give full play to this marketing method because with the cost advantages offered, they will provide more opportunities for the development of B2C.

Razer honoring unauthorized 90% off coupon code

Computer peripheral maker Razer will honor an unauthorized coupon code it discovered this week that granted United Kingdom shoppers 90 percent off their orders. Writing on Facebook (via Polygon), Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan explained that Razer could legally cancel orders placed using the code, but won’t because of its longstanding consumer-first policy.

“While we have the option of cancelling the orders legally, we’ve always had a customer-comes-first policy at Razer and in respect of this incident, we have decided to honor the orders that were placed using the unauthorized code by Razer fans buying single products for their own use,” Tan wrote.

Honoring the 90 percent off code will result in Razer seeing an “insane amount of losses” due to products being sold significantly below costs, Tan said. Despite this, he explained that Razer wants to “do right by the community” and so will honor the codes.

“Our focus is on doing the right thing for our fans, the gamers and the community, not for resellers or users to profit from this,” Tan said. “That’s not gaming, that’s not our deal.”

Tan explained that it will take weeks–and months in some cases–to processes and ship all orders. This is due to the high volume of orders and the fact that many of the items users purchased were backordered to begin with.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience, and we thank all of our customers for their support. Game on,” he wrote.

Razer recently launched its own gaming tablet, the Razer Edge. For more, check out GameSpot’s extended coverage of the device.

How Karmaloop keeps online coupons legitimate

Streetwear retailer Karmaloop has increased its online sales rapidly in recent years by connecting with its base of young adults and offering apparel that fits their lifestyles from brands like Mighty Healthy and Free People. The retailer, No. 138 in the Internet Retailer Top 500, did $130 million in sales in 2011, up 81% from an estimated $72 million in 2010.

Helping to drive that growth is an army of 140,000 independent reps, or customer evangelists, who spread the word about Karmaloop through means including handing out fliers on street corners, writing about the retailer and its brands on blogs, and distributing coupons.

“They’re our street team,” says Megan Knisely, director of affiliate marketing. “They’re brand evangelists who love our brand and spread the word about it. We think of them as an extension of our work force.”

In 2012, she says, these Karmaloop street reps accounted for 25% of Karmaloop’s overall revenue. The retailer’s 2012 revenue figure wasn’t available, though Karmaloop says its street reps also accounted for about one-quarter of 2011 revenue of $130 million, or more than $30 million.

Karmaloop provides its advocates with a web site at repteam.karmaloop.com, where they can sign up as reps, receive their own rep code, and learn how to distribute their rep code as part of Karmaloop coupons to people they meet on the street or online via their own blogs or other sites where Karmaloop doesn’t already have exposure. Coupon recipients get 20% off purchases on Karmaloop.com; street reps earn points, based on the amount spent by shoppers with those coupons, that they can redeem for cash or Karmaloop products.

With coupon-code monitoring software from BrandVerity, the retailer also closely monitors its street reps’ placement of online coupons, to ensure that they play by the rules. If a rep distributes her rep code through a popular coupon site such as RetailMeNot, where Karmaloop already advertises, for example, the retailer will get an alert on an online dashboard, then inform the rep to remove her code from the site. “We want reps to reach new audiences we haven’t reached yet, and we want to be able to give the credit to the reps who are doing a fantastic job of spreading the word about Karmaloop,” Knisely says.

“We have a three-strike rule,” adds Danii Frazier, affiliate marketing assistant at Karmaloop.” If they use their rep codes outside of the rules three times, we suspend them.”

Karmaloop typically checks the BrandVerity dashboard once a week and may find 30 or 40 reps operating outside of its rules. Most make amends to stay within the program. “Sometimes we get repeat offenders,” Frazier says. “But normally reps are willing to work with us; it’s why they’re here.”

BrandVerity, which launched its coupon-code monitoring software in January, provides it over the Internet as a software-as-a-service for which retailers pay a monthly fee based on usage. The fee starts out at about $250 per month for a retailer monitoring once a day one brand with about 25 codes, according to Sam Engel, marketing manager for BrandVerity. The fee rises with the number of brands, codes and monitoring frequency, he adds.

Online Coupons: Pros and Cons

Using coupon codes to entice online consumers is a long-running debate. The pros are: easy to implement, easy to track, and consistent increase in conversion. The cons are: uncontrollable distribution, tendency to drive non-loyal discount shoppers, and reduction of average order value.

Many companies that I’ve worked with avoid coupon codes, saying that the return is not worth the monetary or human resource investment. Lately, however, I’ve seen many effective uses of coupon codes.

Coupons at J.C. Penney

Consider the case of J.C. Penney. Early last year it eliminated many promotions in favor of everyday low pricing and month-long sales and seasonal sales events. The goal was to convey to consumers that they would always get the best available price simply by shopping at J.C. Penney, without waiting for a sale. J.C. Penney dropped non-seasonal sales, promotions, and coupons. Penney’s ran paid search ads, such as the one below, announcing the shift.

It didn’t work. By May 2012, J.C. Penney’s stock price plunged nearly 20 percent after it missed sales targets. For the first three quarters of 2012, sales fell by 23 percent. Since then, J.C. Penney started reissuing coupons.

So even though J.C. Penney committed to “fair and square” pricing, which meant that if consumers did their research, they would see a competitive price without the need for a sale or coupon, why did J.C. Penney’s revenue take such a dive? The answer likely has to do with consumer behavior. Online consumers like to research. They use shopping comparison engines. They weigh whether shipping fees will offset tax savings. They take part in online forums to discuss the merits of price and product. Part of online shopping is the hunt. Consumers want to feel like they’ve “found” a good deal, that the effort they’ve spent in finding that deal resulted in a payoff.

When consumers find a coupon and use it successfully, they believe they’ve gotten a good deal. Never mind they could have purchased that same product at J.C. Penney for the same price without a coupon. If the consumer uses a coupon code he found buried on page 7 of the search results, he’s likely going to tell others.

Coupons Disrupt Purchase Path?

Many merchants fear that coupon codes interfere with the purchase path. This does occur. A consumer goes to a retailer’s website, locates a product she wants to buy, adds the product to the cart, and then exits the transaction process to find a coupon code. This is where affiliate marketing comes into play. The consumer finds a coupon code on an affiliate site, and now the retailer has to discount the product for the consumer and pay commission to the affiliate.

However, there are many ways to manage this scenario with proper attribution. Many affiliate tracking platforms allow for a specific commission rate for coupon sites. For example, ShareASale.com not only allows you to set a lower commission rate for specific affiliates, but it also allows you to see at what point the coupon affiliate entered the shopping stream. As a marketer, if you can see that the consumer visited the coupon site seconds before completing a purchase, likely the consumer visited the coupon site to acquire the coupon code.

Coupons Generate New Customers?

If, however, you see that the consumer visited the coupon site ten minutes before completing a purchase, then perhaps the coupon site truly did drive incremental traffic. By seeing the code on the coupon site, the consumer may have been motivated to visit the retailer’s site, where she browsed for ten minutes before completing the purchase.

Coupon codes aren’t just for coupon sites, however. My company recently analyzed 100 blog posts that generated high traffic for a retail client. Over 50 percent of these posts featured a coupon code. I’ve seen blogs generate upwards of 20 percent of a retailer’s new customers. While blog traffic does take time for a retailer to build, the investment is worth it in terms of new customer acquisition. And, as I saw from our quick study of those 100 posts, offering bloggers a coupon code — with an affiliate link in the code — is a good way to get coverage of your brand.

Summary

So here are the takeaway points. Coupons are not horrible. In fact, they can be beneficial if used as part of an overall marketing strategy. Set expiration dates. Set attribution metrics. Ensure that affiliate commission rates are in line with new and existing customer mixes. And don’t be afraid to test.

Unconventional Ways to Score an Online Deal

Kyle James

Kyle James

Conventional bargain-hunting methods include checking coupon websites, subscribing to retailers’ newsletters, and doing a quick Google search for a coupon code. But what do you do when these methods leave you without a discount? Consider these four alternatives that could easily ensure you don’t pay full price when shopping online:

Use live chat. Many online retailers utilize a live chat service, where they have operators standing by to answer questions about products and services. In many cases, these operators are also armed with online coupon codes to give consumers just for the asking. Offers may include free shipping and up to 25 percent off your online purchase. If you can’t find a coupon for a specific online retailer, open a chat session, if available, and politely ask the operator if they would be kind enough to share a coupon to help lower your bill. Remember to be polite, as many operators will be inclined to have you pay full price if you are rude or abrupt with them.

Abandon the shopping cart. Another online shopping trend that is gaining traction is the virtual cart abandonment strategy. In an effort to build customer loyalty, online retailers are sending a coupon code via email to shoppers who have abandoned their cart before finalizing their purchase. A few of the popular online retailers that are actively employing this technique include Best Buy, Lands’ End, Zappo’s, Home Depot, and Bass Pro Shops.

For this to work, you’ll need to register with the retailer, login to your account, add the items you want to purchase to your cart or basket, and proceed through the checkout process until you reach the payment page. It is not until you reach the payment page that you want to abandon or logout of your shopping session. By doing this, you increase your chances of getting an email from the retailer saying something like, “Hi, please come back to our site and finish your purchase. As our way of saying how much we appreciate your business, use coupon code SAVE15 to get 15 percent off your next purchase.”

Get social. Do you have a few online retailers you regularly shop at? If so, make sure you “’like” their Facebook page and follow them on Twitter. A majority of online retailers are using their social media accounts to not only interact with loyal shoppers but to share coupons and discounts. Many of these coupons are exclusively provided to their social media followers and can’t be found anywhere else online.

Discounted Gift Cards. Are you aware you can purchase gift cards to popular online stores at less than face value? Do a quick Google search for “discounted gift cards” and you’ll find reputable websites that buy and sell gift cards. These sites purchase unwanted gift cards from consumers and re-sell them for slightly more than what they paid. For example, they might buy a $100 gift card for $85 and resell it to you for $92 with free shipping. This is a great savings strategy for consumers if you know you are going to purchase a high-priced item from a specific retailer. You can easily save 10 to 15 percent by buying discounted gift cards. They also make for great last-minute gift ideas.

As technology changes, so does the way retailers interact with customers. As savvy consumers, knowledge is power, and that has never been truer than in the world of technology and the Internet. By knowing these four unconventional ways to find a coupon or deal, you have a new arsenal of tools at your disposal when shopping online. No longer are you forced to pay full price when a coupon seems unavailable.

Kyle James operates Rather-Be-Shopping.com which specializes in online coupon codes, printable coupons, and mobile coupons for over 800 popular retailers. Top stores include Lands’ End, American Eagle, Macy’s, Wal-Mart, and Best Buy.
