Beginner’s guide to online couponing
This post comes from Kyle James at partner site U.S. News World Report.
Couponing has always been a key ingredient when it comes to saving money on purchases.
However, coupon strategies have shifted dramatically in recent years. With the popularity of online shopping, you’re no longer required to spend hours clipping coupons from Sunday newspaper. Online coupons allow you to save without leaving your home computer — and eliminate the time required to clip and redeem traditional coupon offers.
Here are the basics on the various types of online coupons and where to find them:
Coupon codes. The first type of online coupon is also the most popular; they’re called “coupon codes” and are offered by 75% of online retailers to encourage spending and brand loyalty. The most popular coupon codes offer free shipping or a flat percentage off your order total (with no minimum purchase required).
You simply type the code into the designated box when checking out at the retailer’s website. The box might also be titled promotional code, discount code or online coupon key and is typically found on the payment or billing page. You never want to enter your credit card information or finalize your purchase until you are sure your coupon code has been accepted. Otherwise, it can be difficult to go back and try get your discount if the code was entered incorrectly or has expired.
Embedded coupon offers. The next type of online coupon is an embedded coupon, which does not have a code attached to it. These are often included in a retailer’s free newsletter, which you have to subscribe to. Simply click on the offer and it takes you to the retailer’s website, where the discount is automatically applied to your purchase.
Remember to verify your discount went through and read the fine print with these offers, since they sometimes exclude certain brands or clearance items.
Site-wide promotions. These promotions are fairly self-explanatory and include things like “Spring Sale: Save up to 55% off your online purchase.” There’s no coupon code required.
The key, though, to banking significant online savings is combining a coupon code with a site-wide promotion. You can save upwards of 80% off your purchase and often get free shipping included.
Where to find online coupons. An Internet search engine, naturally, is a good starting point. Simply type in the store name, plus the word coupons, and you’ll likely discover coupon websites that update regularly and test coupon codes before adding them. Bookmark the good sites and remember to check them before you finalize your online purchase.
If you have a few favorite retailers, sign up for their free newsletter, follow them on Twitter and “like” their page on Facebook, as these outlets are another way to monitor for great coupons.
Mobile apps. Some coupon aggregators have free apps that can get you online coupons, as well as in-store coupons directly on your phone. For an in-store coupon, as the cashier simply scans the barcode on your phone and the savings are applied instantly.
Popular stores offering in-store coupons on smartphone apps include Old Navy, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Home Depot, Lands’ End, Payless Shoes and Toys R Us.

RadioShack Selling 32GB Nexus 7 for $229 Plus Free Shipping With Coupon
Thanks to coupon code “RARMNJ1320″ you can grab a 32GB Nexus 7 from RadioShack for $229.99 along with free shipping. That’s a total savings of 26.99. Keep in mind that Google is currently selling the 32GB version for $249 and will then charge you $14 to have it shipped. So if you compare to what Google is doing, you are actually saving even more money.
Once you have added the device to your cart and you head to checkout, you’ll have to type in the entire coupon code, as pasting it doesn’t seem to work. Once applied, you should see the discount immediately (pictured above).
If you live near a RadioShack and do not want to wait for it ship, in-store pick-up is free as well.

Staples Offers $50 Discount on Surface RT with Coupon Code
Depending on where you live, finding a 128GB Surface Pro in stock can prove challenging. Best Buy only allows you to pick one up in-store, provided there are any available, and the 128GB SKU is sold out online at Microsoft’s online store and at Staples. That’s the bad news. And the good news? Well, if all you’re interested in is the RT version anyway, we can help you save a few bucks.
Just head over to Staples’ website, plop the Surface RT 32GB or 64GB into your virtual cart, and enter coupon code 99279. According to SlickDeals, the coupon code saves you $75, slashing the price of the 32GB model to $424 before tax and the 64GB model to $524 before tax, both with free shipping.

Bear in mind that Surface RT is powered by an ARM-based processor and therefore isn’t capable of running legacy Windows applications. It’s designed for home consumers looking for an alternative to the iPad, Galaxy Tab, and other tablets on the market, whereas Surface Pro is essentially a full-fledged notebook with a Core i5 foundation.
Be sure to check out our full review of Surface RT.

PC Deal of the Week – Dell XPS 13 – About

Dell’s XPS 13 was their first ultrabook and it was squarely targeted at Apple’s MacBook Air in terms of its styling and features. They have recently updated the system to the newer Ivy Bridge processors but it remains much the same in terms of appearance. Now Dell is offering the older Dell XPS 13 for just $750 with free shipping when using the coupon code J9ZR64?V1WQ2S0. Now this is the older version so it comes with the Sandy Bridge based i5-2467M dual core processor, 4GB DDR3 memory, 128GB solid state drive, 13.3″ display, 802.11a/g/n wireless and surprisingly Windows 7 Home Premium which may attract many buyers since Windows 8 hasn’t attracted much consumer demand. For a more detailed look at the system, check out my review from last year when it was released.

[DEAL ALERT] iPad 2 Only $270 With Coupon Code At CowBoom (Refurbished … – Auto-o
Are you in the market for a tablet this holidays? Then the iPad range would have certainly crossed your radar. However if you’re contemplating skipping Apple’s tablet because of the price tag, read on.
Used iPad 2 16GB WiFi only $270 with coupon at Cowboom
Cowboom is offering the used Apple iPad 2 16GB WiFi Tablet in black for $300. However you can use the coupon code “celebrate10″ which cuts it down to $270 only. With free shipping, that’s $5 under our mention of a used iPad 2 from last week and also makes it the cheaper iPad 2 16GB WiFi model we’ve come across yet. It’s also $130 below the lowest total price we could find for a new iPad 2 if you’re still shopping around for one.
As we recommended in the past, when it comes to buying older generation Apple models, it is always wise to buy them used or refurbished given their lastability and the fact that new models always launch at the same $499 base price tag.
The iPad 2 weighs 1.3 lbs. and features an Apple A5 1GHz dual-core processor, 9.7″ 1024×768 LCD touchscreen display, 802.11n wireless, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, accelerometer, compass, up to 10 hours of battery life, and more. The Cowboom deal and coupon code is valid until 23rd December.
